Milton Glaser designed the original I♥NY logo in 1976. It was the cornerstone of a campaign that was designed to help pull NY state out of a serious economic slump. As we’re all aware, the logo took on a life of its own and has become, many would argue, the most meaningful symbol of one of the world’s greatest cities. Unlike other NYC icons (Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty), no matter how many ashtrays, onesies, keychains, and shot glasses the ubiquitous I♥NY has been haphazardly screen printed on, it seems to be invulnerable to the irreparable effects of the kitsch and cliché. It’s one of those rare unstoppable forces of cool. Nothing can get in its way.
